I hope this gradually warming weather is cheering everybody up into happier moods. I know for us that it's finally awaken us from our hibernation!
I wanted to throw out here that starting tomorrow, May 11th, we're accepting registration for our first annual Summer Reading Contest! That's right, folks, so if you have kids from toddler through 8th grade, sign 'em up! There's no entrance fee, and the rewards are endless! Next week I will be posting the book lists for our three individual age groups (toddler-1st grade, 2nd-5th grades, and 6th-8th grades), and for every book your child reads from our list, they receive another chance to win a fabulous prize at our Third Annual End of Summer Party on August 11th, when the contest ends.
All you have to do is let us know that your child is participating, and what age group they're in, then stop by after June 1st and let them pick out their first book for the summer! When they return the book, we'll ask them a few questions to see how they liked it, and put their name in for a drawing to win a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place prize at our end of summer party! Then they can pick out another book, and do it all again! What have you or your child got to lose? As you can see, this probably wasn't a good idea! But we've come to an agreement to take turns at least once every two weeks to write to you lovely book lovers (right, Deb? ;) )!!! And as there are several events coming up, so this will be a very good thing.

To start, next Saturday, on August the 28th, at noon we are having a PARTY! That's right, you heard it, an all out, end-this-summer-with-a-SPLASH, back to school party! As you may be able to guess, it's going to be a blast, and I really hope to can come! We will be providing lunch (food served until 12:45pm), crafts for the kids, and plenty of fun outdoor games(if weather allows). Please be prepared to get wet. It should start to wind down around 2pm, so you can still make it to whatever fun plans you have for the rest of the day.

I do hope you make it a point to come and finish out this awesome summer with us, your small town Library, next Saturday the 28th. I sincerely hope you all are also as stuffed as the thanksgiving turkey that sat on your family table on Thursday and is now … devoured. :)

This is the post I promised with many details on Santa Clause and his writing friends coming to town. It all starts on Saturday, December 12th from 1:00 to 3:00pm. There will be lot's of yummy snacks and treats, and Santa Clause. But there will also be a book signing, here are the scrumptious details on that:

Book Signing
Hubbardston Library
Saturday December 12th, 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Featuring
Rick Cunningham and Mary Jane (Herald) Kooiman

Rick Cunningham will be coming home to Hubbardston to sign his book "Lucky Elves", a Christmas story about observations from an elf's point of view and the personal discovery that doing chores, being responsible and sharing talents can be rewarding and fun. Rick wrote and illustrated the book. It is full of colorful and funny action cartoons in a bold style that kids love.

Mary Jane (Herald) Kooiman will join Rick with her first children's book "Jackson and the Big Blue Boots", illustrated by Rick, "Jackson" is a charming story about a little boy who loved his blue boots and wore them everywhere. Mary Jane is a graduate of Carson City High School and Central Michigan University and taught English for more than 30 years at Alma High School as well as at Alma College, CMU and Davenport.

The books will be sold for $10 a piece and you don't even have to return them! :)
I hope to see you all there, and if I don't get a chance to talk to you before then, Merry Christmas! To all our small-town Library fans!
For those of you who didn't make it to the Haunted Library, I thought I'd let you know how it went. And for those of you who DID make it… I hope you're brave enough to come visit us for our next big events!

On Thursday night, we had quite the spooky time. Eating brains, drinking blood, and with all our friends (the mummy, the vampiress, the poor bride who was attacked by the vampiress on her wedding day, the skeleton, the frankenstien's monster, and the gypsy witch). We managed to stay inside our newly added "Blood Cafe" for the most part so as not to scare the poor librarians.

On Friday night, it was double the fun as we were joined by the Devil's mistress, a very scary zombie and an exceedingly creepy ghost. Our little cafe filled with smoke from all the socialization of monsters going on, and we snacked on fingers and eyeballs waiting for our next victim to dare to enter.

On Saturday night, it was a sad yet exciting thing. For it was, in fact, all Hallows Eve itself. And the monsters were ready. That night we were joined by the full moon prisoner himself, the werewolf. We had quite a time keeping him chained up and away from the little children (his favorite snack). But all went well yet again, and we all, sadly, had to part ways at the end of the night. Until next year when we so dearly hope to see YOU walk through the door between worlds and come to visit us.

Pictures of all our scary ghouls and goblins will be up soon, please come visit us at our now very normal and un-haunted library :). I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore."[3]

In 1777, thirteen guns were fired, once at morning and again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.

In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. The holiday was celebrated on Monday, July 5.

In 1781, the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration.

In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held the first celebration of July 4 in the country with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled "The Psalm of Joy".

In 1791 was the first recorded use of the name "Independence Day".

In 1870, the U.S. Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees.[4]

In 1941, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday. The residents of Vicksburg, Mississippi, celebrated Independence Day for the first time since July 4, 1863, when the Siege of Vicksburg ended with a Union victory during the American Civil War.

Grandma's Storytime

The Hubbardston Library just received a generous donation of $200 with the following note:

Please accept this donation in honor of "Grandma's" Fahey and Burleson who bring Storytime to our kids encouraging them to read and for spending time with them and allowing them to use the library.

The library thanks the person or persons that made this anonymous donation!

Board Games and Pizza

July 24th, 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

The Hubbardston Library is hosting a Board Game party for lovers of old-school face-to-face gaming fun! Her music is described as folk Americana with attitude; lyric-driven melancholy that's gutsy, introspective, organic, emotive, acoustic, and laced with twang. A modern-day Patsy Cline whose voice has been seasoned to Americana perfection. She has been compared to k.d. lang, Emmylou Harris, Natalie Merchant, Kim Richey, Dar Williams, Rory Block, Indigo Girls, Cowboy Junkies. Her influences include Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, k.d. lang, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams.

Pull of the Moon, MJ's long-awaited third album (set for release in late May 2008), sees her rolling up her sleeves and plunging into the grittiness that is Americana, through the sweet, familiar melodies of folk. The added trim around the edges reveals her deep roots in country, jazz, rock and pop.

On these 12 tracks, MJ's unwavering smoky vocals start from the dirt in the crawl space, climb the stairs to the kitchen, the bedrooms, the attic, and finally blast through the roof. She takes you on a journey starting with the evocative opener "Up North" (about her small home town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula), weaving a story around the life of a guitar, life's pushes and pulls, love, loss, heartache, freedom from the nine-to-five job, and the appeal of the open road. You will be conflicted by the lyrics as they first lure you with the promise of good times before abruptly dropping you into a chasm of loneliness and heartache.

MJ is set to tour Summer 2008 (Tennessee, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina) to share and promote her new CD.

Producing a pretty big sound armed with only a single guitar and her vocal chords, MJ's songs leave you humming well after the last note is sung. Personally connecting with the audience is important to MJ, and her charm, musicianship and professionalism shine during her performances. Entertaining runs in the family and she claims to be addicted to the stage.

MJ has performed steadily since 1998 in and around Seattle, and has also taken her music to Oregon, Idaho, Texas, California, Montana, Michigan and Florida. She has shared the stage with many Northwest musicians, including The Starlings, Christy McWilson, The Paperboys (Canada), ThorNton Creek, Moe Provencher, Nancy K. Dillon, Eva Tree, Matt Price, and Brandi Carlile.

Combining deep roots in acoustic music with a maturing country sensibility, MJ creates a genre that is, in many ways, her own.

This concert will be 7-9 pm on Tuesday, June 24th at the Hubbardston Library. Depending on the weather, it may be inside or outside, so please bring your camp chairs just in case.

Ice Cream and refreshments will be available.

Tickets are $15 per adult, for MJ. $20 at the door.

Library donations are appreciated.

Learn more about MJ Bishop at her web site:

http://mjbishopband.com/

or

http://myspace.com/mjbishopband

Board Games and Pizza

May 29th, 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm and June 21st, 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

April 24th, 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm

The Hubbardston Library is hosting a Board Game Night for lovers of old-school face-to-face gaming fun! A few volunteers wanted to create a local library. How do we do it?

We started with a couple of classrooms, some old furniture, and old books that the school left behind. Now, we have 4 classrooms of space, lots of brand new donated bookcases, over 9,000 books, 3 iMac computers, wireless internet, and over 500 VHS movies! Most of these items were donated by folks in the community, and even outside of the community.

We first tried to start a Michigan Non-Profit Corporation, but we were rejected. We needed to contact the State of Michigan Library to start a library. So, we hired a lawyer and met with the Village of Hubbardston, North Plains Township, and Lebannon Township. We also met with the Carson City Public Library and the Lyons Township District Library. The lawyer for the State of Michigan Library even came to visit, with further information on starting a library.

After all of that, we concluded that the time just isn't right for starting a real library. We needed to stop spending time and money on those things, to focus on building up the library itself. So, we formed a Michigan Non-Profit called the Hubbardston Book Nook. Although that is the official name, we still call ourselves the Hubbardston Library. And we still hope to become a real library someday.

Please stop by sometime and take a look around! - Duane
